John E. Bassett diary, 1861-1883; bulk: 1861-1864.

Diary kept by Priv. John E. Bassett of Southbridge, Mass., kept while serving with Company D of the 25th Regiment, Massachusetts Infantry, 1861-64. Bassett maintained almost daily records of camp life including drills, inspections, and dress parades; records of sick, wounded, and killed men; and details of Burnside's expedition to North Carolina, 1862, the Battle of Cold Harbor, 1864, and other campaigns and skirmishes in North Carolina and Virginia. The diary was later used by Bassett as an account book, 1875-76; and to record Union songs heard at reunions, 1880-83. Collection also includes lists of men in the 25th Regiment; Bassett's discharge certificate, 20 Oct. 1864; and letters sent and received while Bassett lived in Connecticut, 1865-86, discussing memories of serving in the Civil War.

The 25th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry was a Worcester County unit, organized at Camp Lincoln, Worcester, Mass., in the autumn of 1861. It served as part of the Burnside expedition to the coast of North Carolina, was assigned to the Star Brigade in 1864, and spent much of the war in the vicinity of New Bern, North Carolina.
